This home achieved a silver rating in the Minnesota Greenstar program and was the first home to receive that distinction. It shows how normal-looking and comfortable "green" design can be. Aside from discreetly placed solar panels on its roof and lush natural landscaping, its "green" features are only visible to a trained eye. The driveway pavers are only one example. They look like ordinary brick, yet they are really made of recycled tires. They are produced locally to reduce fuel use in transportation. And they are laid in a way that allows rainwater to seep between them into the earth, recharging the groundwater supply while reducing undesireable runoff.
An intimate and thoughtful home. Throughout the home, you will find thoughtful and elegantly designed touches that add to its grace and charm while enhancing its usefulness. For example, the Owner's Bedroom has a private veranda that provides an intimate yet panoramic view of the Village Green. On a more prosaic note, the covered patio in back can be completely open for unfiltered enjoyment of the outdoors. But if you press a button, screens will come down from the ceiling to keep mosquitoes out.
A "Life Cycle Home." Families have many different needs. One family may need a nanny for its small children. Another might want a twentysomething child to stay with them after college while they establish careers. Another might want elderly parents to stay with them. The same family might even have all of these needs as time goes by and the family passes through the cycles of life. Our Idea Home can adapt to these changes because of one built-in asset: an apartment at its lower level with a separate entrance, bedroom, and small kitchen that can give any of these people the dignity and independence they need.
It is, of course, built with the pride and care typical of Keith Waters & Associates.
This Shingle Style home is on one of 25 homesites in Portico, our conservation neighborhood just outside of downtown Wayzata. This home is typical of the Portico neighborhood, with a front porch that encourages conversation with people strolling by and a wooded back yard with a wetland view and lots of privacy.
In addition to being open as part of the 2008 Luxury Home Tour, this home has been featured in Midwest Home and Midwest Living magazines. Midwest Living called it their Idea Home and made it the focal point of their September/October 2008 issue.
And this home is bursting with ideas.
